Benefits of Winter Tyres
Winter tyres are an essential part of your cold weather car maintenance.
Many motorists don't realise the safety benefits of fitting winter tyres to their vehicle. All-weather tyres are not designed to work in heavy snow or ice. Once the temperature drops below 7 °c traction can be improved and stopping distances reduced with the fitting of winter tyres.
Unlike summer tyres, lower temperatures do not cause winter tyres to harden. Winter tyres are made with a unique, specialist rubber compound and include specific tread designs. The compound keeps tyres flexible in the cold and the combination of bespoke tread gives drivers much more grip and control when temperatures drop below 7 degrees °c. More grip also means shorter stopping distances. All season tyres offer a compromise between summer and winter tyres.
Contrary to popular belief winter tyres are not just for driving in snow. They are designed to improve safety and increase performance in all cold weather conditions including damp and wet roads, as well as snow and ice.
Winter tyres provide a grip on the road that cannot be matched by a summer tyre. The difference in stopping distances of winter and summer tyres can be up to 8 metres or two car lengths on a snow covered road driving at 50km/h.

Most drivers are keen to improve their car’s safety in dangerous weather. If you’ve ever skidded on ice, you’ll know how scary it can be. Summer tyres are simply not designed for use in cold weather, as they become less effective on all types of road surfaces when it is cold.
UK seasons have proven to be unpredictable, so winter tyres will be key to keeping your car moving in the colder months. We understand you may be reluctant to buy two sets of car tyres, because of concerns over storage - which is why Merityre Specialists will store your summer tyres for FREE in our Tyre Hotel.
To get the maximum benefit from your winter tyres, we recommend fitting them as soon as the weather starts to cool, usually in October. Winter tyres generally don't wear more quickly than summer tyres, so you can fit them early and enjoy maximum benefits. At Merityre we recommend that you fit 4 winter tyres for optimum safety.
We offer a wide range of winter tyres for all vehicles. Call your nearest branch and our expert staff can advise you on every aspect of tyre safety, specification and suitability.
