What’s Included in an MOT?

A number of components on your vehicle need to be checked to ensure they meets the minimum legal standards set by the DVSA.

Brakes

Often using a roller brake tester, the MOT test includes a test of the vehicle’s braking system, ensuring it is in top condition and performing efficiently.

Lights

All lights, including headlights, brake lights, indicators, and rear lights, are checked to ensure they are correctly positioned, working properly, and show the right colour and intensity.

Mirrors

Your mirrors are inspected to make sure they are secure, in good condition, and provide a clear view of the road behind and to the sides of the vehicle.

Steering and Suspension

The steering and suspension systems are checked for wear, corrosion, and how well they operate. As this is one of the most important aspects of the test, your MOT tester will ensure your vehicle handles safely and predictably.

Windscreen

The windscreen is examined for cracks, chips, or other damage that could obstruct the driver’s view. Most importantly, the area directly in front of the driver must be clear and undamaged.

Seatbelts

All seatbelts are tested, checking their condition, security, and proper operation to make sure they can safely restrain passengers in the unfortunate event of a collision.

Seats

All seats are checked to ensure they are securely fitted and adjustable where applicable. The driver’s seat should be able to move into a safe driving position and remain stable.

Fuel System

The fuel system is checked for leaks, condition, and any insecure fittings. The fuel cap will also be checked to ensure it closes properly and seals the system correctly.

Emissions

Exhaust emissions are measured to ensure the vehicle meets environmental standards. The exhaust system is also checked for leaks, noise, and any insecurities in its mounting.

Wheels and Tyres

All tyres are inspected to ensure an appropriate tread depth (minimum 1.6mm), condition, and type for your specific vehicle, whilst the wheels are checked for damage, cracks, and any insecure attachments.

Wipers and Washer Bottle

The wipers and washer system are tested to ensure they operate correctly and are able to effectively clean the windscreen, maintaining proper visibility in poor weather conditions.

Horn

The horn is tested to ensure it works properly and is loud enough to alert other road users when necessary.

Registration

Your number plates are checked for their condition, cleanliness, legibility, and correct formatting. In short, they must be securely attached and easily readable.

Vehicle Indication Number (VIN)

Your MOT tester will check if your Vehicle Identification Number, also known as a VIN, is clearly displayed and matches the information on the vehicle’s registration documents.
