Yes, a car service is different to an MOT test, but many vehicle owners are unaware of the difference between the two. The MOT test is an annual test designed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), and it must be undertaken annually once your vehicle reaches three years old. The MOT test ensures that your car is roadworthy, whereas a car service checks the mechanical condition of it.
During a car service, a qualified technician will look at the parts of your vehicle susceptible to wear and ensure that it is in good mechanical condition. Having your car serviced regularly will help to reduce your risk of breakdowns and can help you to avoid unnecessary repair bills further down the line. For more information, take a look at what is checked during the MOT Test and during a car service.
At Merityre Specialists, we offer three car servicing options to suit varying requirements.
Gold service
We provide a comprehensive Gold Service which includes a full check of your engine, a replacement of spark plugs, air filter and fuel filter (if applicable) as well as an inspection of the exterior and interior of your vehicle.
Silver service
Our Silver service is a full servicing option, and we would recommend that this is undertaken every 12 months or 12,000 miles. During a Silver service, we will check your engine, brakes, tyres and steering, as well as perform a diagnostic check.
Bronze service
We also offer a basic car servicing option, which is called a Bronze service. This is ideal for cars which are frequently used to drive short distances, as it checks that all essential vehicle components are performing satisfactorily.
Merityre Specialists provide car servicing at our Abingdon, Andover, Bagshot, Chertsey, Farnham, Hazlemere MOTs, Leatherhead, Little Chalfont, Sunbury, Thame and Wallington branches. Learn more about what's included in a car service now.
Electric Vehicle Service
Our electric vehicle service is now available and is advised to be carried out every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first.
If your vehicle is long overdue a car service, you should book your car service as soon as possible. Merityre Specialists would recommend undertaking a Gold Service in this instance, which is a comprehensive check that will ensure all vehicle components are working effectively to help maintain the condition of your vehicle. It is recommended that you have your vehicle serviced every 12 months, or 12,000 miles. Vehicles which are frequently driven long distances may benefit from interim servicing as well.
Missing a vehicle service can have a detrimental impact on the condition of your vehicle, and it will more likely cost more in the long run. This is due to the fact that a car service provides your vehicle with essential maintenance and allows the opportunity for any issues to be identified and remedied before they potentially develop into more serious problems. In addition, if your vehicle is under warranty, missing specified service intervals can invalidate your warranty.
A car service typically takes anywhere from 1.5 hours for an interim service, to around 2 to 3 hours for a full service. It’s important to note that this is just a general guideline, and depending on any unexpected issues that are uncovered, these t...
You should service your car every 12 months, or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. These guidelines are typical of most manufacturers, but depending on your vehicle and usage, you may need to get it serviced more frequently - for example, high-mileage drivers may need to get an interim service every 6,000 miles. every 6,000 miles.
To check your car’s service history, there are several reliable options. Start by contacting your car manufacturer or approved dealership, as they often keep detailed digital records of maintenance and repairs. You can usually request this information directly through their official website. If your car has been serviced by a franchised dealership or national garage, they should also have service logs available.
For older vehicles, try checking with independent garages or the previous owner, who may still have paper records.
It’s important that when looking for your service history, you will need to verify ownership—typically by providing your V5C form, VIN, car keys, and proof of past work. Keeping your own copies ensures easy access when selling or maintaining your car.
A full car service is a comprehensive check of your vehicle that includes services like: an engine oil and filter change, inspection of vital systems like brakes, steering, and suspension, and a thorough safety check of components like lights and tyres.
A full service should be performed annually or every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first, for most vehicles. It also includes checks on fluid levels, batteries, and often a diagnostic check of the engine and other components.
An interim car service is a routine maintenance check performed between major services, typically recommended to drivers with especially high mileage every six months or 6,000 miles, to keep a vehicle running smoothly and safely. Much like a full service, it includes tasks like an oil and oil filter change, fluid level checks, and safety inspections for your brakes, tyres, lights, and wipers.
This minor service acts as a vital check-up and helps identify issues early to prevent more costly repairs down the line.
