Are Short Journeys Bad for Your Car?

Whether it is the school run, a quick trip to the shops or a short commute, many of us regularly use our cars for journeys of only a few miles. They may be convenient, but are short journeys bad for your car? 

The occasional short drive is unlikely to cause a problem. However, if nearly every journey ends before the car has properly warmed up, it can place extra strain on the battery, engine and exhaust system. During a very short trip, the car may not have enough time to:

  • Complete a diesel particulate filter regeneration cycle 
  • Reach its most efficient operating temperature 

 

Do short journeys drain a car battery? 

Yes, repeated short journeys can contribute to a flat or weakened battery. Starting the engine requires a significant burst of power. Once the engine is running, the alternator begins replenishing that energy, but a brief drive may not give it enough time to restore the charge fully. 

The effect can be greater in winter, when low temperatures reduce battery performance and drivers rely more heavily on lights, heaters, heated windows and other electrical features. If the battery loses slightly more charge than it regains on each trip, it can gradually become too weak to start the car.

Are short journeys bad for diesel cars? 

Diesel cars are generally less suited to a routine consisting of mostly short, low-speed journeys.  Diesel cars rely on a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to filter soot out of the exhaust gases. Without longer journeys soot and particulates aren’t burnt off causing the DPF to become clogged. 

The DPF burns off soot by a process called regeneration. The vehicle’s engine control unit (ECU) will monitor the levels of soot accumulating and can send an injection of fuel during the combustion cycle to raise the temperature and clear the filter. Is petrol or diesel better for short journeys?

Diesel can still be a practical choice for drivers who regularly cover longer distances, particularly on faster roads. However, buying a diesel purely for short, low-speed trips may increase the risk of DPF-related issues and prevent you from gaining the efficiency benefits normally associated with diesel driving.

Are hybrid cars good for short journeys? 

Yes, hybrid cars can be a good choice for short journeys, especially in towns and cities. A full hybrid can use its electric motor at low speeds and recover energy through regenerative braking, which can make stop-start driving more efficient. 

A plug-in hybrid can also complete some short journeys using electric power alone, provided it is charged regularly. If it is rarely charged, however, you will be using more fuel due to the additionalweight of the battery and motor without receiving the full efficiency benefits.
