This Tyre Safety Month TyreSafe want to get motorists in to the habit of regular tyre checks all year round.

During the summer months, weather conditions can be unpredictable and inconsistent and this may well catch out many motorists. In addition, busier roads and heavier loads can contribute to the stress we put on our tyres when it’s warmer outside.

Some popular tourist routes experience a 25% rise in traffic during the summer, so it is important that your tyres are safe and in good condition!

Tyre Checks

Every month, all year round, you should undertake routine checks to your tyres to make sure that they are in good condition and will keep you safe on the road.

• Visually inspect the condition of your tyres and make sure that there is no damage such as cuts, tears, lumps, bulges or punctures. Even if the damage seems small, this could indicate serious damage to the internal structure of the tyre, so you should seek specialist advice and avoid driving on them.
• Ensure that your tyres have at least 3mm of tread by checking them with a 20 pence coin. The legal limit for tyre tread is 1.6mm but if tread drops below 3mm your grip, stopping distances and wet weather capabilities are drastically affected.
• You should also visit a local garage or service station monthly to ensure that your tyres are inflated to the right tyre pressures. Under inflated tyres do not provide adequate grip and are more prone to damage so make sure you keep them correctly inflated.
